I skipped the annual New Year’s Day fundraiser in Ocean City, MD, for Atlantic General Hospital. I’ve seen it before, and it looks something like this.
It’s not that hard to restrain myself from starting the New Year by running into the Atlantic Ocean, no matter how good the cause. Now if I can only maintain such self-discipline for 12 more months, it will be a great year. However, I still intend to learn to hula hoop. — John

Princess Lola Visits The Vet
I really need to brush Lola more often. And use the flea comb! Next time, I’m getting a short-haired cat that doesn’t shed.
Took Princes Lola in for her long overdue rabies shot yesterday. A fox has been sighted in our neighborhood, which reminded me about rabies. Lola cried all the way to the vet’s in the car, but was quite content once she knew we were homeward bound. I think she actually enjoyed the attention.

Steve McCurry On Photography And Blogging
You too, could be a blogger. Or even a photographer. It’s interesting to me that in the age of video, words and photography remain irreplaceable. I wouldn’t want any photographer to miss Steve McCurry’s work. His advice to budding photographers is also good for budding writers. To paraphrase: Find a particular place or subject, and dig deep into it. In a way that’s like my motto, “Write what you know.” — John

December Sunshine @ The Beach
Seventy degrees in December! It’s not unheard of in Maryland, although normal temps would be in the 40s during the day, maybe 30s at night.
But throughout the northern U.S.? Seventy degrees in December in Chicago? Temperature records are being broken in some places. Winter’s off to a mild start. (Reality check: Don’t get too excited. Winter doesn’t officially begin until Dec. 21.) I’m trying not to be complacent. A blizzard might slap us in the face when we least expect it.
December is always a variable month here in Maryland. We rarely get snow before Christmas. But we don’t often enjoy 70 degrees, either. The photo above was taken a few days ago at the south end of the Ocean City boardwalk. Too bad there’s not many people here to enjoy it, except us year-rounders.
Seventy in December. Global warming? You think?
