STUDYING TWITTER — I didn’t have enough blogs, Facebook, and email to keep me busy. As if! So I had to add Twitter. Social media expands to fill the time available. This is progress, right? @BJohnHayden

Happy Holiday Week!

A belated Merry Christmas to all WordPress friends, and best wishes for the New Year. Is 2013 a lucky or unlucky number? We’ll know 12 months from now. Meanwhile, looks like we’re going over the cliff, or the curb, or whatever. Hope it’s a fun ride. I’m in the big city, watching my sister’s cat while she’s in Maine, Christmassing with her grandchildren. I head home (and back to reality) on Saturday. Lots to write about, and lots of your posts to catch up on. Be safe, be well, talk soon. — John

Week No. 2 @ The Gym

Week No. 2 at the gym: After three days in a row last week, my body requested a day of rest on Saturday. That worked out well, because I’ve been able to show up at the gym every other day this week. Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday. And I intend to go today, Friday. I start with stretching, then an easy walk on the treadmill for 30 minutes, and a few minutes on the rowing machine. Some days I do some strength-training exercises on the machines. Thursday, I did both cardio (the treadmill) and the weight machines, so today’s a quick and easy day, treadmill only.

Two Days In A Row
Status
Showed up at the gym two days in a row! A sense of being overwhelmed by work and pressed for time has been the undoing of my exercise programs over the years. These days, I’m not as busy, but my mind keeps telling me to hurry. Ignore that voice! No fitness goals or expectations! The only goal is to keep showing up every day. — John
Showed Up @ The Gym

The 12-month gym contract. Been there, done that. Doing it again. When it comes to success at the gym, showing up is half the battle. In life generally, I like to set my goals a little bit high. But at my age, starting at zero fitness, I think a goal of simply showing up is appropriate. I accomplished showing up today. Now my goal is to show up six days a week, five days minimum. — John

Aging wears you down, I can report, based on 64 years of experience. One doctor told me our bodies are designed to wear out. Too much exercise might wear out your knees faster. But I’ve suddenly realized that I won’t be able to get out of a chair in five years, unless I take up strength training (in moderation). Yesterday, I joined my local gym. Now if I can only manufacture some self-discipline. — John
Simplifying Your Life Is Not Simple

SIMPLIFYING YOUR LIFE IS NOT SIMPLE — I’m finally getting serious about my winter project, which is weeding out and getting rid of the stuff I don’t need or use. Today I started on the books (I already decimated my library once, about five years ago.) Spent the afternoon dividing books into three categories: give away, throw away, and save. I didn’t know this was going to be so hard.
Post-Election Blues

POST-ELECTION BLUES — It’s part of life. Comes with the territory. You go to college four or five years — You graduate?! Get a steady job — Laid off?! You get married — Maybe you get divorced?! Work like a maniac on the big project — Suddenly, finished. An election focuses your attention — Over, done, results are in. Letdown, big time! We might need a few days to catch our breath, figure out where the heck we are. And what to do next? — John
Election Day 2012 Part 2

ELECTION DAY 2012, 11:48 p.m. It was as cold as expected in Maryland today. I was wearing Obama T-shirt over my winter jacket (layering is key in cold weather). This is supposed to be a conservative precinct. Almost no minorities. Not many men, either, I guess. Women, esp. young women, voting in much higher numbers than men. (I can’t explain it.) Young women and young men — many first-time voters — voting in surprisingly high numbers. I didn’t know we had so many women under 25 here. Lots of them signaling a quick thumbs-up. Obama wins this precinct, unless my eyes deceive me. Ohio has been called. Looks like Obama will be a two-term pres. Health care wins. Women win. I hope Obama wins the popular vote too, or it may be a long four years. — John
Election Day 2012

ELECTION DAY — November cold and gray in Maryland. Must be bitter cold across the northern states. I’m working at the school from 2 p.m. to closing time. Done it many times before, from early morning opening to past closing time in the darkness. No more all-day shifts for me now. It’s mainly a matter of being present in warm clothes, standing silent witness for Obama and Democratic principals. Polls open until 8 p.m. in Maryland. Results from early voting will be announced shortly after 8. A long day and night. I can predict the results in MD (if you want to know, call my cell phone); who knows how it will end nationally. — John
